Future Climate Souvenirs creates engaging artifacts that provoke awareness and discussion of the climate crisis through humor and speculation rather than doomsday scenarios. In this series, Chicagoans imagine how they might adapt their infrastructure and create new nature reserves, regenerative schemes and eco-tourist sites in response to predicted atmospheric changes and ecological impacts.
I Spotted an Armadillo - Cook County Forest Preserves
Spot Chicago’s newest resident, the armadillo in a Cook County Forest Preserve
Armadillos have arrived! Take a stroll through one of Cook County’s Forest Preserves and spot one of Chicago most recent arrivals. Typically residents of the south-west, the nine-banded armadillo has been moving north for decades and with the extreme changes in climate causing milder winters, Chicago has become more welcoming to species from warmer climes. With tree cover, relatively low foot traffic, and warm, humid, soft soil providing a perfect place for digging a cozy burrow, the Forest Preserves of Cook County have become the armadillo’s chosen Chicago habitat.
